Reason #1: Water is in big demand all over the world–even where you live. Access to clean, safe drinking water is in short supply in many regions. We can’t manufacture any more new sources of fresh water.  Water comes back to earth through the hydrological cycle, a process by which water in liquids, solids and gaseous states is cycled through our ecosystem. Our planet keeps recycling the same water over and over. It starts accumulating particles of almost everything it touches.  Along the way organic materials like fertilizers and other chemicals, animal feces, bugs, parasites and viruses not to mention microscopic pathogens such as e-coli, Cryptosporidium and Guardia are making their way into the water systems.

Most cities rely on aging distribution systems to carry water to consumers. Older pipes often develop leaks that can lead to cross contamination with surface water and waste-water.

There are a lot of water filter systems out there. We’ve seen them all. We’ve tested all of them too. We needed to see what they were like before we recommended a particular water filter system to you, our customers.

Know which water filtration level is right for your needs.

What gets through and what doesn't.

There are only 5 levels of filtration.

Every water filter in the marketplace will fall into one of these levels. ONLY ONE of them is designed to provide safe, clean drinking water.

Particle Filtration – This is the lowest level of filtration. Typically it’s a first stage filtration process. It gets the big stuff out of the way. Only particles that your eye can see get removed at this level. Coarse filters trap solids such as leaves, feathers, hair, and other solids we like to refer to as the unmentionables!  Not a reliable source for drinking water, bathing and other external uses.

Micro Filtration (MF) – A low pressure (10-100 psi) process forces water through a semi-permeable membrane, typically an activated carbon block. Filters such as the Brita, G.E., Pur, Aquasana and Culligan are a few examples of this type of filtration. The lower range of filtration falls between the particle filtration up to a 5 micron level.  The smaller and potentially toxic microorganisms like E-coli can slide through this filter with no trouble at all to contaminate your drinking water. It is only at the upper MF micron levels that can remove larger bacterial organisms.

These low-volume filters also require frequent changing with everyday use. That usually means a filter cartridge replacement every 100 gallons. If a family of 4 averages 1,000 gallons per year that means filters need to be relaced at least every month–if not more.

On the positive side, the price of micro filtration units is usually very appealing. But remember, in emergencies you will still need to boil your water. But all in all, this level of filtration does not meet our criteria for quality, maintenance or sustainability. Not a dependable or cost-effective source for safe drinking water.

Ultra Filtration Level (UF) is a low pressure (5 – 150 psi) process that forces water through a semi-permeable membrane with pore sizes ranging from 0.005 – 0.01 micron. Did you know that the smallest known bacteria is .02 micron in size? At the ultra filtration level, passing a .o2 micron element through a .01 or .005 micron hole is like trying to get an elephant through a straw. Ultra filtration traps even the smallest microorganisms, elements such as oils, particulate matter, bacteria, viruses, parasites, and even proteins.  Water, acid and alkaline compounds and dissolved minerals still pass through the membrane. When the ultra filtration water filter is manufactured with a 0.01 or less micron membrane, then you’ve got a keeper! An effective, dependable and cost-effective source for safe, clean drinking water–even in an emergency.

Nano Filtration Level (NF) is a low to moderately high pressure (typically 50 – 450 psi) process that can remove salt from water. Membrane pore sizes ranging between UF and RO. Typical NF applications include water softening, desalination of dyestuffs, acid & caustic recovery and color removal.

We like the NF when a household has problems with hard water or salt because water, acid, alkaline and mineral compounds can still pass through the membrane. Yet, less than 5% of the population will need this level of filtration. An NF unit is well suited to well owners, for example, because NF can improve the life span of pipes, appliances and other conduits by removing hard abrasive mineral content from raw well water.  NF is suitable as a drinking water filter option for the rare occasions that it is required.

Reverse Osmosis Level (RO) utilizes a cross-flow separation process, while water is forced through a membrane under pressure. Any trapped materials are flushed away in a cross stream called the concentrate. RO membranes will reject dissolved and suspended materials including salts.

We are not advocates of RO for many reasons.  Flushing out the concentrates wastes a lot of water. It takes 5-10 gallons to produce one usable gallon of drinking water. That’s a lot a fresh water down the drain. A wasteful, expensive process.

Also, since all dissolved and suspended material is rejected by the membrane, the RO permeate is pure water without any minerals– minerals that are essential to health. We refer to RO as the chemotherapy of water filtration. And finally, RO water that has been “purified” is then stored in a holding tank, providing ample opportunity for re-contamination.  Not a eco-friendly, cost-effective or healthy option for drinking water.

OK, so what about Ultraviolet, Ozonation, and Distillation? Well, these are not filters, but water treatments. In all cases their treatment process will kill the bacteria or virus but not remove them. So again, if you like drinking water with dead bugs and elements in them, any of these will work.  Or you could add a filter to the process as a second stage.  Similar to RO, they use far too much water, are expensive to maintain and in some cases remove the minerals and require storage tanks.  In all cases, the water cannot maintain its integrity over a prolonged period of time.

So there you have it. Ultra Filtration is the one that best meets our water quality criteria specifically for drinking water.

When you purchase a $20 or $40 or even $99 filter system you think you are getting a great deal.  But, then do the math with the costs of monthly (or more frequent) filter replacements. Even if these little filters are only $20 you quickly discover your annual true cost is much higher. A family of four averages 1,000 gallons of drinking water per year. We ran the data comparing 10 leading faucet and pitcher filters which are at best considered mid level Micro Filtration to the Ultra Filter and here is the coles note summary of or our research: Initial filter system cost from a low of $19 to a high of $577.  The Ultra Filter initial investment $285. Filter replacement cost from a low of $7 each to a high of $173 for every filter change based on filter capacity. The Ultra Filter total annual replacement cost is under $120 for all 3 stages. Most filter systems rely on one, and in some cases two stages to reduce chemicals and remove harmful elements.  The problem is getting a filter fine enough to filter down to the .01 micron level that is acceptable. Filter finely with no clogging. Ok, here is the secret.
